What is Chair based yoga?

Updated: Jun 23, 2023

We think that chair based yoga was developed in around 1982 in order to support a student with arthritis who was unable to perform floor postures. It is now a hugely popular form of yoga which truly makes yoga accessible for everyone.

Chair based yoga is simply yoga that is performed using a chair as a prop, whether that be to hold onto, to sit on or to use as a support for the body in balances and standing postures.

Chair based yoga is a gentle technique that allows everyone to fully reap the many benefits of yoga, making the postures achievable and accessible to all, regardless of age or physical condition.

Chair based yoga is both safe and beneficial.

It is ideal for the elderly, or those who have mobility problems or suffer with chronic pain.

What are the benefits of chair based yoga?

- Reduces stress and promotes relaxation

- Manages and reduces pain (through breathing techniques and from the body releasing natural painkillers when we are exercising)
